1. a) the act of syncopating or quality of being syncopated; a shifting or anticipating of the accent to a normally unaccented beat, produced for example by beginning a note on a normally unaccented beat and holding it into a normally accented beat, by beginning a note between any two beats and holding it into the following beat, or by using accents (sforzandos) on normally unaccented beats. b) music marked by syncopation, such as jazz or ragtime. c) a rhythm, dance step, or passage based upon syncopation.
